Look Inside the Book
Inever set out to be an author. Well, except for that one time I attempted to write a children’s story when my girls were little…and I quickly realized writing fiction was just not something I was meant to do. At all.
Then one day in November 2000, I had a powerful moment in the presence of God that forever changed my life, and I began to write. These were simply the words impressed to me as I’d read my Bible and then listen to what God was speaking to my heart. They were personal, and they were for me. I never intended for these words to be read by anyone else.
At first, it wasn’t easy to write these words. I had to push past the voices of critics who said that God didn’t speak to people today. I could have listened to them, but instead I chose to pay attention to the words of His book.
Words found in the Psalms, where David set the example for a life lived with dialogue between man and God, writing his experiences that bring hope and peace.
Words from the Apostle Paul, who recorded the dialogue he had with God over a difficulty he encountered. God’s answer begins like this: And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
I figured if journaling the thoughts God impressed onto the hearts of people was an acceptable practice for King David and the Apostle Paul, then it was an acceptable practice for me.
Nearly fifteen years later, the words continue to flow.
Just a handful of us came together that New Year’s Eve for a time of worship and prayer as the new year began. Fourteen people, to be exact, including the kids.
That night, I couldn’t shake loose the thought of coming to God and asking for a gift for the year ahead. I was especially fixated on the list of gifts I saw in 1 Corinthians 12—gifts of the Holy Spirit that are radical in scope and life-changing.
I know Scripture says these gifts are given as He wills, but I didn’t think God would mind if I asked for one of my choosing. I asked for wisdom. I thought that would be a good place to start.
That simple request re-ignited the time I spent before God. Day after day, I’d write what He impressed on my heart, and be amazed at the revelation He was giving to me. Soon I realized that these insights were not meant for me alone, but they needed to be shared.
And that is how this book Powerful Moments in the Presence of God began…as a journey of discovery, as a journey of delight.
